well the mustang tires have been wearing away since the day i bought her, i somehow managed to get dry rot on my tires on a car that is out almost all the time... i have no explanation. and i apparently ran over a nail recently. my original plan was to buy a set of 20"s with a decent street tire, and buy a good set of street / strip tires for the factory 17"s. at this time i dont have the $ for a set of new wheels and tires, but i know i have to replace these tires sooner or later. the car doesnt get driven much after november / it snows, and doesnt really come out of hibernation until april-ish so im not worried about tires that have anything to do with the weather. i think what i want is a strong street tire, that has just enough tread that i can still move a bit if i get stuck in a rain storm.

im looking at a 285/40 17 for the rear and a 245/50 17 for the front

anyone have suggestions or ideas? im trying to not change the rotational diameter too much.

I had kumho ectsa SPT's before and they gripped like a motherfucker and had a nice and stiff side wall. They were fairly cheap in my size, i think I paid like 90 a tire or something. Only downside was they wore fast.

Now I'm running some Hankooks. They aren't bad but not the greatest. I ended up with these basically because it's what I could afford after killing my kumhos.. Very cheap tire like 75 a pop cheap lol.

When I had the SHO it had Fuzions. I thought they were garbage.

General Exclaims are supposed to be a good bang for the buck. IIRC Ed's running those on his 19's.

anyone ever heard of sumitomo tires?

315/35 rear, 245/45 front, $434 to my door, just never heard of them, the tire rack review seems good, but, ya know.

I've heard of them. I haven't had any experience with them. They were a tad cheaper than the tires I'm running now.

You really want 20's on a Mustang?

I like the 555 Nitto normal street tires. Hell I'm still driving on them after 5 years and I've got tons of autox runs on them. They are awesome for daily driving and driving in the rain. If you'd want something with more grip for like a street tire class for racing, I'd check out the Nitto NT-05. They come in Mustang/Camaro big boy sizes.

yea, i want 20"s for the street, they look great on my car, granted i realize 20"s are also very heavy, so when i take it to the track, i want a lighter rim with a stickier tire.

20's look sick on those cars. just look at jays car. i found him those 20's pretty cheap
Mk3 Supra
Maxxis makes a nice set of tires.

Whatever floats your boat I guess. Not really my thing.

I know a few people who ran those Sumitomo's from the newengdsm club and they liked them I think. I don't know how long the tread lasts or how well they grip, but they are cheap. I'd probably give them a try as a corvette daily driving tire... I know I've seen those cheap in the corvette wheel sizes.

Sumitumo tires, but they gotta be run flats. peepwallA.gif

I can chime in I guess.. I don't really push anything that hard though.

I have Nitto NT 450s on my Cougar.. I got them when they first came out.. They are noisy when the roll. I guess the NT 555 is an improvement. However they are cheap now. I went with a 255 and 275 width... I felt the 245 would look too small, on your Mustang it should be ok.

The truck got Falken STX01 (I think). I really like them and have no issue with them even in monsoons. They will create massive amounts of smoke when spinning though.

Cavalier got Pirelli Pzero Neros. They were expensive at the time, but these are probably my favorite tire. If they had them larger, I'd get them for everything.

And yes I agree 20s would look great on that car.

Wide 17's is where it's at. I'm sure you could fit some 295 width tires in the front there smile.gif

you get what you pay for with tires.

I disagree sorta. Particularly I think the overpriced OEM tires that dealers charge to people who don't know any better are almost as good as a cheaper Falken, Nitto, Bridgestone, etc... set of tires. Now if your talking about Pep Boys specials.. you get what you pay for...

^ +1 on the getting what you pay for. I love my BFG Super Sport's. I think they were $97 a piece for me when I bought em at the beginning of this season. And granted they are an all season tire but I also didn't want to get stuck in the rain and I haven't had an issue yet. Even with all this rain they haven't even tried to hydroplane on me.
