Chrysler is apparently considering selling the Dodge Viper high-performance sports car to a third party in order to raise cash and focus on Chrysler’s core business of high-profit, high-volume cars, according to company Chairman and CEO Bob Nardelli.

Viper, which has been a part of Chrysler since the first show car was unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in 1989, could become a piece of history for Chrysler.

“This strategic review comes as the Company focuses on enhancing its core business and leveraging its assets,” said a press release from Chrysler.

We have been approached by third parties who are interested in exploring future possibilities for Viper,” said Nardelli.

He continued, “As the Company evaluates strategic options to maximize core operations and leverage its assets, we have agreed to listen to these parties. We will do so keeping in mind the best interests of those who have shown tremendous support for the vehicle- including employees, suppliers, dealers and a worldwide group of loyal Viper owners and enthusiasts.

“Viper is an integral part of this Company’s heritage. While this is a strategic review, our intent would be to offer strong operational and financial support during any potential transaction, in order to ensure a future for the Viper business and perpetuate the legacy of this great vehicle.”

Chrysler was quick to point out that no definitive timetable or decisions have been made and that the automaker is reviewing all possible options in its strategic review. The review is unique to the Viper and is not being conducted on other Chrysler products.

Quite unfortunate news, in my opinion. If they do decide to go this route, I'm curious if the outcome will be a pernicious one for the company.

Precisely. Not to mention the temporary layoffs that just occured at their Toledo plant, with more temporary layoffs being planned for future dates.

That is correct. On November 1st, they announced that the Magnum (along with four other Chrysler models) would be discontinued due to their restructuring plan.
StayinStock
they should just scrap the Viper line.
Last thing i want to see is "Made in China" stamped on a Viper
mike
tHEY BETTER NOT GET RID OF THE VIPER THAT HAS TO BE MY ALL TIME DREAM CAR SOMETHING ABOUT THEM THINGS THAT I HAVE LOVED FOR ABOUT 10 OR 12 YEARS THERE JUST A BADASS CAR

I understand the financial reasoning behind dismantling the Viper line. What I don't understand is the "image" reasoning. The Viper has been an image for Chrysler for quite some time, and I sense that it would be quite a large burden on their image if they decided to disseminate this brand from their core.

So all thos rich bastards now have a "collectible" car? Wtf!

This would be poor marketing. This was always the Mopar halo car.. what would replace it, the SRT8 Challenger?

Fail.

i personally cant see it happening....I could see it going to an independant tuner that maybe already customizes Vipers.

thats the one i was thinking of but I dont know much about vipers and there tuners

Hennessey did great work, and it certainly was great to always have Lingenfelter Corvette vs. Hennessey Viper arguments consistently.

In regards to another company acquiring it, I don't see that occurring. General Motors already has the Corvette; it would be financial suicide to bring in another car to compete with their premier image car. As for Ford, well, they had the Ford GT, but they are lacking a premier sports car at the moment (I still have a hard time considering the GT500 a true Z06/SRT-10 competitor). The Mustang is a huge image for them at this point, and I certainly don't see that changing any time soon.
