So I havent had a chance to look at it too much. But my car (ball joints have been on the way out for a little while but not too bad yet) started fucking screaming for help today. The drivers front wheel seems like its going to pop the fuck off. The sound it is making is as if there is something in the axle swinging around and hitting the underside of the car. There are too many possibilities in there for me to guess at it and just start replaceing shit. First step is change the fucking ball joints....but I think this might be a tierod. I need help diagnosing this one guys. Lets see what everyone narrows it down to and then when I have it towed home, I'll start looking there.

I would agree that either a tie rod or ball joint may be the main culprits although a knocking sound over bumps could also mean a bad strut.

its not over bumps.... the sound is timed with the spin of the axle. It also goes away while the brakes are applied. Thats why I was thinking tierod

and the noise has a loud clicking noise from outside the car.... you can hear me coming for sure!

its hard to diagnose without hearing it..... but hopefully someone (shammy is good at this) might be good at taking an online description and translating it to wtf is wrong. LOL

no if there was no clicking noise then it would be the bearing not the tierod
Sully

wheel bearing sounds more like and unbalanced tire wabling...... while they may be fucked from whatever this is, they arent whats making the noise and thumping that I feel in the gas pedal

wow that much for ball joints on that car?
Sully
Aug 29 2008, 08:04 AM
they are pressed in..... if I could find the right ball joints I could have them pressed but lincoln sells the knuckle as a whole
and its actualy 256 or something like that

Aug 29 2008, 08:07 AM
yeah not sure wha the tie rods are gonna run me.... but it looks like I wont be lowering the LS or turning my cell back on. When it rains it poors. First I have to step huge and bail out the familly and now when I have a chance to get back on track, the car sticks it in hard and breaks it off!

Aug 29 2008, 08:09 AM
looking like its about 100 bucks for each tie rod

Is that AWD?
I'd be tempted to put the car on jackstands and let it run in gear.
Sully
Aug 29 2008, 08:47 AM
RWD.... wont work, but good idea. I can put it on stands a rotate the wheel

ive had similar issues with another car, however the car was fwd, so it was really the axle, the clicking was the key.
if the ball joints are on the way out and the only other thing you can think of is the tierod, why not replace both and see if that fixes it
Sully

so ehre is whats wrong.... ball joints on both side, wheel bearing on drivers side, and inner tie rod on passengers side. Not to mention that at 93k miles the shocks are due for replacing. hee hee hee
