Full Version: What To Look For When Buying Jeep Wranglers
Rekless Racing > Tech Forums > Domestics
Nick?
Well i am looking for some pointers on what to look for when purchasing a Used jeep Yj 1988-1995
The Onion
frame rot. rear main seals. trans leaks/slip yokes off of the transfer case.

Id stay away from 88-91's to be honest with you. 88-90's have the 4.2 liter with the shitty almost impossible to pass emissions with carbs. You can fix that by buying carbs but its just not worth it. Stay away from the 2.5L's also. If you plan on modding the truck youre gonna want a 4 liter. The 91 was the first year of the 4.0 fuel injected in the wrangler so there is a few kinks in it. The doors tend to rot away on them also. They are leaf sprung front and rear so be aware of that. Automatics are only 3 speeds and really arent worth it either. The 5 speeds are a decent trans but they love to eat clutches. Also the 4wd is also activated by vacuum so thats another thing to look out for. There should be vacuum disconnect for the front axle also which kinda sucks

They have kinda weak axles. D30 low pinions in the front and dana 35's in the rear. Gears are from 3.07, 3.27, 3.55 and 4.10's(4 cyl) If you plan on going any bigger than 33's on a stock axle theres no point.

Honestly for the amount of overpaying youll be doing on the YJ you might as well look at TJ's (97-06) you can get 97-2000's for around the same price.

They both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Cherokees are cheaper and longer. This means a little more fun if you use it on the trail. But it takes more lift and cutting to fit big tires on it. You cant pull the doors and top off(doors you can but not anywhere close to as easy) You can pack more gear and people in cherokees.

Wranglers are usually more expensive and shorter. If you rock crawl this is also a good point. You can fit 31's-32's with no lift but once you flex youll tear shit up. a 2" lift will net 33's and will cost you around 200 bucks(TJ) You can pull the top off and doors off with ease. There isnt much room for storage.

I like my house for this reason. I own a cherokee and my father owns a wrangler. If I want to go for a cruise with no doors or top I can steal his rig for a while. My rig I can pull the doors off and be happy with it.

I can load my rig up with my 52" Hi-Lift jack, 31x10.5r15 spare, tools and a milk crate full of fluids and what not in my truck and still fit 5 with ease. A wrangler has the tire on the outside of the rear door but try putting a hi lift in with tools and all the crap I have in mine and still fit people in the back. Its not fun. Also the wrangler can only fit 4 and its very uncomfortable(unless you get an LJ which is the wrangler unlimited....basically a newer version of the CJ-8 scrambler)

Its honestly personal preference. Im not down talking wranglers at all....if you asked about cherokees the list would be just as long if not longer.

Stay away from the 2.5L's also.

whaaaaat? The 2.5 is basically the same iron duke from early f-bodies. They're tanks. You could drive em with no coolant and no oil for a day and they just dont die.

They're slow as shit though, so if you get big tires, dont plan on going up big hills.

the AMC 2.5 is NOT the same as the GM 2.5, close but not that close.... the 2.5 in my comanche ran fine until i tried to drive it like an f-body on the way to the CFK show lol, now it's blown up and a 4.0 is on a stand waiting to be installed in its place .... if you have to get one with the 4, make sure its '93 or newer cause those motors have the mpfi instead of the tbi

Yeah what he said, We sell so many axles for jeeps doesn't matter if its wrangler, Cherokee, whatever. We also sell a shit load of them in-line 6 cylinder engines. From what I was told the rear main seals like to go in them.

Rear main seals do like to go in them....but for the shear fact that people are so damn lazy and dont feel like taking care of their vehicles is the reason you are selling so much of that junk.

4.0's are tanks. My turd has 199k on it and it runs like its brand new. My old 92 had 250k and still ran perfect. the kid still drives it to this day.

Axles arent that weak. again people being lazy.

And nick Im telling you....if you want a wrangler look away from the YJ's. Im speaking from experience.

4.0/ TJ ftmfw
Frame rot...axles..All said abovee

I've got your jeep thing, now It burns when I pee. hah
The Onion
lol

Nick you can get lifted auto 4 liter TJ's for the price of a 5 speed 4 liter YJ. Lifts are much easier on TJ's as they are coil sprung all around.

Just remember though....buying a jeep is an addiction. Look at how mine has come in the short time I owned it....look at wayne buying his XJ to make a 4wd MJ...and dont listen to mark...he just doesnt like jeeps LOL

And one more thing...the saying of "Just Empty Every Pocket" is very true. Ask anyone who uses a jeep the way it should and theyll tell you. I hope the advice helps and wish you luck in your search.

What dollar amount are you going for?
