Full Version: 700r4 In A Circle Track Car

Wanted to get some opinions from those that now these trannys.

1. Do you think it could take the abuse of a circle track car. The motor does not exceed 6500 RPMs and will make no more than 300 Horses

2. Would there be that much of a difference speed wise between using a 700r4 and a th-350?

I have both Transmisions 2 700r4 and 1 th350 and if it would take it I may just stick with the 700r4 I now they have a lower 1st gear ratio. Wanted to see what people thought ?
PSquare75
I'd use the 350 for simplicity.

id say no need for a 700R4. the turbo 350 should be fine, a turbo 400 may be better. but why are you using an auto. is that all they allow at seekonk in the pure stocks?

and how often would you really use first on the track?

You have to use a tranny thats stock to the car so I could use a T-5 but very weak tranny in stock form. And has for using 1st on the track facepalm3.gif seeing we start from a rolling start thats a good point LOL

Really ?????? what year where they in you'll make my day if I can

Did some research

History of 3rd Generation Camaro

--- 1982 ---
3rd Generation Camaros introduced: Sport Coupe, Berlinetta, and
Z28. Z28 selected as Indy 500 pace car. Five engines were avail-
able with the Camaro. The LQ8 2bbl 4 cylinder, the LQ9 TBI 4 cylinder,
the LC1 2bbl V-6, the LG4 4bbl V-8, and the twin TBI LU5 V-8. Trans-
missions were a 4 speed manual and a 3 speed automatic. All Camaros
came with front disc brakes.

Youre right the 82 used a 4 speed saginaw I much prefer a manual over an automatic Shootmyself.gif I am gonna have to do some research to see how I can mount the torque arm and what to do for a crossmember. But yup 1982 was the 1st and only year that a 4 speed was used making it legal for me to use !!! Thank You
BoostedDakota
700r would be a waste since you dont need the OD. i would put a t5 in it if i were you
LS6rally
get a saginaw 4 speed. you can find them at swap meets everywhere!
LSRengineering
Good luck finding the pedals for the saginaw! Been there tried that!

The OD on the 700r4 is useless and so is the taller 1st gear. Find out the gear ratios of both trannys and the tire size and figure out which gears will help you more though.

I would just run a pedal like http://www.daymotorsports.com/product/109/...-PEDAL-ASSEMBLY The only thing and mine my ignorance is I believe all saginaw 4 speeds where mechanical again I have alot more reading to do. But def what Im doing Just bolt the thing to the ground. Im def goona go with the 4 speed. I have a friend who installed a muncie in his Camaro same year left him a message to get info.
LS6rally
the linkage is mech. but its all adjustable. just ogt to get a linkage setup that is close and then adjust it to be perfect. and trust me, if the linkage isnt perfect you'll know it!

Looking at everything this is what Id have to do
use this throwout bearing http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Stock-Clutch...-Kits,1945.html

with this pedal http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Floor-Mount-...Pedal,7069.html

and a master cylinder behind pedal ?

For the clutch set up
erty67
If you have the th350, I say throw it in. dunno.gif
camarofreak72
Well lsst night ed I was pretty much done with the idea about a 4 speed but I went around the internet looking for a answer to the problem I had everything else figured out cross member and clutch system " I actually discovered there is a way to mock up a ol T5 master cylinder to work and use a stock pedal. The only issue left was the torque arm well I found this thread on thirdgen.org http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/fabricat...o-street-3.html Great thread with alot of great stuff. on post #142 he made a bracket for the torque arm. Didnt really go into details but I am contacting him for info.
camarofreak72

If you look to the left it looks like the bracket was made to the stock crossmember just welded on I would presume?
on the stock 4 speed there was a spot to mount the torque arm but its gonna be near impossible to Find. So this seem like a suitable solution
BoostedDakota
there is a saginaw 3 speed on racing junk.com in the mass section

Id have to run a 4 speed. Either way I look at it Im probally not gonna be able to do it. without the stock tranny and crossmember.Spoke with a friend who has ran pure stocks and he admited I stand the chance of being teched and being told thats not stock. So Im gonna stick with the th-350 which is allowed has much has I would love to run a 4 speed and would be willing to do the work. It would be pointless if I was told to take it out and to boot my car being new is gonna strike attention and being at the track and seeing new cars there people like to point out the smallest things.

t5 and t45 only risk blowing during hard launches on stickies....they're rated for 275 lb/ft, and since you're going from a roll anyways youd be alright
FWDLOL
damn right
MARK
let me drive that car with a t5. im on my 2nd one and this one is screaming already. junk,.
FWDLOL
abusing a t5 is one thing. driving the hell out of one is another
LSRengineering
T5's are trash.. nuff said. I've had to change them more times than I wish. They dont like lanches, powershifting, fast shifting, or downshiftig hard. Basically theyre JUNK.
BoostedDakota
thats the truth. on the 3rd one in the ranger!! this one is the best one yet
camarofreak72
Yea Id be all set with a t-5 my teacher is interested in trying to get a saginaw 4 speed in there. We may go through with it. I wouldn't try it by myself but has a project we where talking about it today.
