My son's car battery died last Wed. On Sat I replaced the battery and it was fine as far as all power. He didn't use the amp and sub per my advice until we knew the charging system was ok. He tried it on the way home from school Mon. and the sub had nothing. He told me his idiot friend decided to play with the jumper cables while they were connected to my son's car. He touched the end of the cables by accident and my son told him to be careful. The fucking idiot continued to touch the cables together, making them spark. Is there any chance he ruined the sub by doing this ? There is power from the amp to the sub wiring, I hook up a regular speaker and got sound. We took the sub out of its box and tried the wires directly to the terminals and there is nothing going through. I did read somewhere that a AAA serviceman hooked someone's battery up backwards and ruined quite a few components by doing this. Any ideas ?

i have a inline fuse for my amp under the hood between the Batt. and the firewall(People also put them in the trunk), I d check to see if yor son runs one and see if it is blown out, the speaker wire still might have a signal so you still might have sound...just not power to run the sub

I tried a 9v battery test and got nothing. Tried the battery on another speaker to make sure it was good and got a popping sound like I should. I guess he"ll need a new sub. Anyone have a 12" out there for cheap ?

I would guess the amp for the sub has a blown fuse make sure the amp is working right I don't think a sub can be damaged by what he did but I know that fuses will pop

truth. there's the inline fuse which should be no more than 18" from the battery terminal. then, the amp itself probably has a fuse or two on it. If the cables had been reversed, it would have fried the ECU and stuff first, i dont think the current would have made it through both of those fuses and hit the sub.

he said he hooked up a regular speaker to the amp and it was fine. now the sub is not powering up but the amp is. sub is blown

if you push down on the subwoofer and hear a scratching or rubbing noise than the subwoofer is blown. if not than the subwoofer is fine. if the light on the amp comes on than there is obviously power. should double check the fuses as mentioned and make sure the subwoofer is connected properly. cant tell you how many people trashed their speakers because they did not connect the + and - wires correctly.
if it is blown, you can usually contact the company and get a recone kit, or you can go to fixmyspeaker.com and they can fix it for you, or make it a lot better. and both will cost about half the price of the original price of the subwoofer
