Ok...here's the situation...

My buddy has a 1996 Hyundai Elantra that is acting up on him. As he is driving the engine will start to sputter , get bogged down, and begin to stall. It is damn near impossible to accelerate while its doing this. If you put the car in neutral and give it gas however, it will usually come back just fine. When it dosen't come back, the car stalls out completely and then is slow to restart, and upon restart there is a decently heavy gas smell.

So, what could be the cause of this? Injectors? Plugs? Coils? Anyone have any ideas?
bonnEVIL
id look at the filter as the fastest quickest way to try and fix it. after that id look into those things.
jcat
fuel filter seems most likely.
Walkingchaos
order of operation, check :

air filter and check to make sure the MAF is connected and clean
fuel filter (replace it its like 4$)
plugs are cheap, change em bc if youve been running that rich they are fouled now.
wires (its not coil on plug is it?)
and theres a slim chance its the cat plugging up and failing . . in which case burn the car, its not worth fixing >=)

I don't think so...I'd have to check though...

It was on for a bit, then it went out. It went out right after one of these episodes.
Walkingchaos
did he pull the code ? itll still be in the computer.

Don't think so...I'll tell him to have it read...

I was assuming it was an 02 sensor mis read from the car running rich.
Walkingchaos
never assume.
Nrw
dead o2 could throw the computer into safe mode which would have it run rich. resulting in poor performance and bad gas mileage.
RSX2nr
If I take the car to autozone without the check engine light on, their OBDII scanner should be able to still take the reading, right?
D. Snuts
Yup

check the coolant sensor for the ECU and the air intake temp sensor, when one, the other or both fail, it will tell the car to fuel for -40 degrees.
