Well I'm wiring in the new MSD box and I really hate extending wires etc. I was wondering what you guys though about swapping the cap around 180* so a couple wires can reach. Anyone think theres any negatives?

The wires normally attach on the drivers side but I want to swap them to the pass. side. As long as I keep #1 where it was before it shouldnt matter right?

Zack
can you just flip the cap? I know on my distributor the cap can only go on the housing one way. But either way, as long as the rotor is facting the #1 wire when cylinder 1 is at TDC you can put the distributor housing whatever direction you would like. Just get it setup right, then take the hole thing out of the motor and turn it all at once till it's where you want. I don't see why it wouldn't work.
LSRengineering
The dist. is already stabbed. I just wanted to flip the cap around.. it does fit.

All I would need to do is put the #1 wire back where it was before, no? Thats what I was thinking.
Zack
Ya I guess that would work too. Along with all the other wires right where they were. And I'd check it with a timing light to make sure it's not off a few degrees.
LSRengineering
Yeah I know its off a few degrees from last time I played with things but the car hasnt run since sept. so I havent cared yet.

you should be fine just keep the firing order and wires in the same spot.
Zack
What I usually do if I think something will work but I'm not sure, I just try it anyways, and if something goes wrong and breaks or it doesn't work, I never let anyone know ph34r.gif

Thats what I figured.

lol zack

I did the same thing last week with mine. The cap dont care which terminal is number one. Just make sure you point the rotor at that terminal and follow the correct firing order. Also remember that you will need some wiggle room to adjust the timing. Which dizzy are you running?
LSRengineering
I'm using a HEI, I figured as long as the wires go back on in the same order etc. it wont make a difference.
StayinStock
the only reason not to do it is if a different mechanic works on the car next and the cap is marked on #1 plug.
it just keeps things tidy and neat for the next mechanic.
if you do all the work on the car yourself,it doesn't matter.
LSRengineering
No one touches the motor but me. Thats the rule lol

unless your name is Nelson and you get the wires done just in time to sell the car. lol.gif

oops,did i say that?

Nelson knows karate.

I may have a new HEI type rotor for that dizzy. I ended up getting the wrong kit back in the day from MSD

TRUTH!

LSRengineering
Well it doesnt work. The cap and distributor housing have a keyway for them to lock into each other. Ohh well I extended the wires.
BOTTLEDZ28
If its easier for you, just designate the number 1 terminal to a different place.
LSRengineering
It wasnt the plug wires it was the wires from the MSD box to the dizzy. I hate expanding wires and soldering and crap so I wanted to try that but I had to extend the wires anyways
