i ordered a R1 Throttle tube for my GSXR. Any one know how i can take off the grip i have on now with out damaging it? and how do i put it back on and make it stay on? (is there specialy glue or something)
Stangman_NB
I just swapped grips on mine and CJ's bike....if you have access to an air compressor you can get the grips off very easily. All you need is the compressor and a ball inflating needle. Stick the needle between the grip and the throttle tube, when you pput air in, it'll seperate the grip and the tube. Then you wiggle the grip off while simultaneously shooting air in there. When putting it back on you just reverse the procedure, you can also spray hair spray into the grip, before putting it back on so that it's be like glue after about 24 hours.

awesome thanks! and i heard about that hairspray trick... i honestly thought they was joking.
Chewy
try to do it with just air though, hairspray tend's to loosen's up with moister, i always just use air
J Kellz
could you also roll it off and then roll it back on?

I dont like mine coming off after I get the ones I want on. What Nelson said about the air is def the best way I have found so far. I dont use a needle, but air comp and blow the inside out like a bastard. I then use a 2 part epoxy i have that works on EVERYTHING and coat the inside of the new grip. When its wet, it kinda lubes the grip a bit, then dries and that bitch wont move. The hair spray moisture issue doesnt effect the epoxy at all. You will have to cut those grips off should you ever decide to remove those. But its worth it to me since Im putting the grips I want on.
JonT
ever heard of using WD-40?
Stangman_NB
wd40? hell no you def don't want that anywhere near your grips/bars.

yeah brake fluid works too peepwallA.gif
04redracer
soap and water + compressed air. reattach with grip glue NOT hair spray
Stangman_NB
I have yet to have any issues with hair spray at all....but feel free to use whichever technique you'd like bud smile.gif

i've rode agressive bmx for along time and air is the best way period, unless you use glue or safty wire, but no need for that

why order a r1 throttle tube for a GSXR????
04redracer
its a mod. quicker throttle response.
Stangman_NB
1/6th turn instead of 1/8th is I recall correctly
JonT
yea its a mod. the gsxr you have to turn it 1/4 to get wide open throttle. with the r1, you only have to turn it 1/6 of the way to get wot.

easier power wheelies
ccwrx
so you basically get the same thing adjusting your throttle cables?
Stangman_NB
kinda...I saw a write up on it a while ago on another site...seems to be a favorite cheaop mod among alot of different riders. the part that the throttle cable attaches to on the tube is bigger on the R6 tube versus that on most other bikes. So by changing the tube out, you have to twist it less to get to full throttle, hence quicker response. I think they normally go for about 11 bucks, so it's one of those cheap/almost free mods

yup, and there companies that sell the mod "quick throttle kits" that are the same thing, just $100 more.

and you do have to adjust the cables a bit due to the size of the throttle thing.

WD40 works just fine for removing grips. The straw makes it easy. It sticks grips quite well too. It's not a lubricant as everyone believes, and when the carrier evaporates it's extremely sticky. Plus WD40 won't deteriorate and come unstuck when it gets wet.

I've used them all in my years as a bicycle mechanic, WD40, hairspray, air guns, glue, you name it. In truth they all work just fine, so use what you have on hand.
