TOLEDO, OH (WTVG) -- A never-before-seen police dash cam video was shown in court today in the trial of an Ottawa Hills police officer accused of shooting and paralyzing a man during a traffic stop.

The video shows Officer Thomas White following Michael McCloskey and his friends on their Harleys. At one point, McCloskey takes off at a high rate of speed. Officer White hits his siren and McCloskey stops his bike.

Officer White ends up shooting McCloskey. Attorneys for White say he believed McCloskey had a gun. However, McCloskey was unarmed and appears docile in the video.

The jury will have to determine if the shooting was justified. White is charged with felonious assault and faces up to 11 years in prison

could have at least tried to shoot the cop after he shot him. then according to that video, it would have been self defense. he made no move towards a gun or any other weapon and was already pulled over by the time the cop got to him. there was no threat to the officer at all.

So i was thinking one thing and then i saw the other. Find I often find myself playing devils advocate on these police videos. Maybe because I have alot of law enforcement friends. But If you think of your self another 15-25 degrees left of that camera what do you think you see after you've just told him to put his hands up.

I think we had a thread about the guy who video taped the unmarked pulling his fire arm. The acceleration from the stop and the small but subsequent chase initiated the gun being drawn. You hear no mention of how long they were being followed. They knew he was there when they punched it at the stop sign. They make no mention if he had warrants or other arrests either.

The other guy jumped a big median at what looks like a rotary while another squad car chases him.. Then you make a verbal command on a biker and he doesn't comply, makes a move like he is removing a weapon from his belt area. ??
J Kellz
he yelled to put his hands up as he shot the guy. he gave him no time to comply

I'm sorry I didn't see this sooner. Here's a little background before you go in with pitchforks to the Ottawa Hills PD.

The city of Toledo completely surrounds Ottawa Hills, which is an extremely nice and pretty neighborhood/city. However it borders several sketchy areas. The cops over there are major dicks, but keep in mind they have to put up with the scum living in the adjacent Section 8 housing which is chock full of shitheads. Think of them as border guards trying to keep the assholes in line to preserve the nice community they serve.

The street they are on is a 25mph street through a dense neighborhood, and the bikers shouldn't have been gunning it through there. Since they essentially ran from the police (they certainly didn't stop right away, and the one guy lost control of his bike while trying to get away) I can't say I'm surprised the officers reacted with some alarm, but I do think the shooting is going waaaaay over the line. I think it's an unfortunate knee-jerk reaction to a percieved problem that wasn't there.

I feel awful for the shooting victim, but I can't fault the officer 100% because the rider was goofing off in a very bad area to be goofing off.

i re-read this thread and since it was bumped to the top i did a quick search. Most of the crime comes from burglaries and Arson. We have to remember we don't live there and don't know the tension or activity in and around this time. Just that this happened. No one is checking crime statistics in that article, no one seems to be in the field reporting the atmosphere to crime and gang activity.. so we don't know. There is no dash cam that goes back days or months to tell you if there is intel on suspects or people of interest in this neighborhood.

the guy that was shot never ran. when they took off at the stop sign, the cop never had his lights on. as soon as he did turn them on, he had pulled over and was waiting (unlike the other biker). it was completely out of line for the shooting and the cop should be crucified.
Mr.Srtee
the biker gave the over the shoulder like he was Sasquatch, why people don't think it's a good idea to do what a police officer tells you immediately and with out hesitation is beyond me.

listen to the video again. if you listen to the cop as he yells the FIRST time, he shoots before he even finishes what hes saying.
wantahertzdonut
I don't condone the officer's actions and it's a terrible judgement call on his part. Yes, he should be put through the ringer for it. All I'm saying is like it or not, the bikers were being stupid in a place where you don't want to be.

Cops are everywhere in Ottawa Hills and they're jumpy. I stayed out of there unless I was on my bicycle for that very reason.
wantahertzdonut
Small world- the second officer involved (Chris Sargent, you see him in the other patrol car in the video) is a guy I drove busses with in college.
