wowww...imagine a cure for cancer. so many lives would be saved.

PSquare75
Nice! The cynic in me says this is going to cost a medium sized fortune
1stLadyRR
but you would pay that fortune for someone you loved.
PSquare75
You're missing my point. That's the problem with stuff like this.

Whomever invents the "Fountain of Youth" Drink is going to be a quadzillion-aire. Or Dead. And if they do make it, Do people on say, welfare get it? Who foots the bill?
MoN
I really hope this goes through, and they find a way to lower the costs so that insurances cover it.
1stLadyRR
insurance will never cover it ..... but there will have to be loans and things like mortgages... it sucks to think that you would have to take a mortgage out on your life yes..... but id rather be paying to live then die an agonizing death.

This isn't the only Cancer cure technology coming to market, there will be competition for this treatment if it works in Humans. Cost will still be high, but they won't be the only game in town.

This is amazing but what about overpopulation? We are starting to run out of room. Don't take me the wrong way, I have lost a few family members to cancer and would have paid anything to keep them but cancer and aids seem to be a form of population control.

I completely agree with you. Yes we sound heartless by saying it but lets face the facts. I also lost a few members of family due to cancer and it sucks.

Yes.

Population control as cancer? They'd be MUCH better off telling people to not have 7 kids and doing forced sterilization.. If your family can't fit in a Yukon, and you're on Masshealth, close your legs, since I'M footing the bill.

Or let me borrow the Yukon on Sunday. It is, after all, 'mine'
Tap
This is awesome and call me gullible but i feel that this may be alot cheaper than expected due to a few different reasons if this works then all these find a cure cancer organizations will need something else to hang their hats on possibly contributing to keeping the cost down now that they have found the cure keeping the cure attainable to general population. Call it wishful thinking on my behalf

That's another point I agree with. It seems the "wrong" people are having all the children. A lot of successful couples are not having children or only 1 or 2 max while you have others popping out kids to get more benefits. If we started telling people not to have children they are going to say it's their "right" to have as many as they want. We need to stop supporting some of these families. Everybody needs help sometime but we need to stop supporting the leeches.

One state is paying drug addicts to get 'fixed'. I think AZ? I forget, I saw it on CNN.
1stLadyRR
there ares till thousands of diseases and much more killing people, diabetes, heart disease, homicide, suicide, war..... in the U.S right now..... so i dont think "over population" will be an issue.

MikeK
the pharmecuetical companies will kill this before it ever comes to bear. They make waaaay too much money treating the disease they can't afford to lose.

There was a cure for A.I.D.S. til the companies got their hands on it.....

smiley_ninjakatanas.gif

Otherwise, its some amazing news, would be great to see it come true....i'll keep my fingers crossed...
Stangman_NB
well the drug companies can make money, seeling generic versions of the drugs to peopl ethat cant afford the name brand shit. it happens with all kinds of drugs right now anyway right?

About half a million people die of cancer in the U.S every year. It is a horrible way to die, most people that die of cancer would have lived many more years if they didn't have it. I'm not trying to offend or piss anybody off but death HAS to happen. There are just over 300 million people in the U.S. right now. Without cancer we would have about an extra million people. I know some will die of something else and there are plenty of other things killing us but wit cancer cured we would just move on to curing something else and then something after that. I am all for modern medicine and am amazed at the things we can do but we are destroying the planet at an alarming rate as it is. Cancer and disease are the only things keeping us in check.

Income to treat >>>>>>> Income to cure.

Even if you price the cure super high, you'll never match the income from making people pay for the rest of their life (shortened though it might be).

Always remember, its in the drug companies best interest that you be sick....

Hey we still have AIDS and The Flu is gonna get crazy.. The population will find a way to even it's self out. Our Cures will be the Death of Us..

We keep the disabled alive, vegetables coma victims.. Don't allow terminally ill patients to be euthenised.. We are the only species that keeps it's sick, dying and decrepit alive.

The Flu has "gonna get crazy" for years now.

I'm STILL making fun of my step-father for his mass order of medical masks from back when the Avian Flu was going to wipe us out.

The only difference between the Flu outbreaks now and the "contained/normal" ones of the past is we have a more sensationalized media outlet that hypes up the sick.

Could have something to do with the fact we're the only species with the ABILITY to keep those types alive....just saying....

Population control? Really guys? Ignoring the vast lack of sensibility in those posts...what about WHO dies? Ok, we may overpopulate, but what if a genius that could figure out life off our planet, or any of a million other means of expanding our world died prematurely because of cancer? There's never an excuse for allowing people to die.

As to the Original Topic, things happen in our world today for one of two reasons:

Someone can make $$$ off of it

or

Someone cares enough about the result that they push hard enough for it to fight through all the people trying to stop it because it will lose them $$$

I'm hoping this comes to fruition, because there's no reason anyone should have to suffer through cancer. But the reality is, there are a vast number of very wealthy and powerful people who would never want to see this happen.

I'm not here to start any arguments at all, I was just suggesting another way to look at things. As far as the person dying before they could make a contribution to humankind the same could be said for abortion, homicide or any other form of death. I hear people use the phrase "died prematurely" a lot, who dies before they were supposed to? We don't know when or how we are to die. My father passed away at 42, not old at all but it was his time and yes if there was something I could do about it I would have. We just need to remember sometimes seemingly good things have consequences.

imagine the poverty and overpopulation

I dont want to sound like a dick, but people need to die. Ive lost very close family to cancer and i know how much its a shitty way to go, but if we make babies and dont die, we will all be chilling with the dinosaurs
