sooo went through the carwash earlier and apparently the headlight didn't seal too well. Driver's side low beam went out.

Anyone have a spare D2R bulb layin around? Factory temp i think is like 4300k if possible i'd like to match.

OR, does anyone know of a place that'd be open right now that has one?
jcat
anyone? any thoughts?

lol thanks homie. That'd likely require cutting some wires which is something I'm not about to do on this car.

Autozone wanted 130 for a replacement and I'd have to wait 2-3 days. Luckily one of my old tasca buddies manages the Advance on putnam pike, ended up paying 107 for the bulb and I'll be able to pick it up tomorrow morning.

Figures the damn thing blows out a half hour after the only places to get them tonight close. car's fckin lucky I love it so much lol
Tap
lol i figured so much but sometimes us car guys get desperate and will try things like that to get by for a bit till we canget what we want at the price we want
J Kellz
i had a set of 9004's around lol

you'd have to rebase the capsule to make a bulb based HID unit to work.
jcat
so basically fuck my life. Got the bulb from advance this morning (110 later) anddddd turns out it's not the problem. The passenger side is working just fine, swap that unit over to the driver's side, aaaaand nothin. Only LH headlamp fuse I know of (10a) is not blown, so it's gotta be the ballast.

just go aftermarket dude, DDM tuning FTW

eh I'm a bit leary of that, especially with the way the electrical systems in these cars are. I am definitely looking into it because the OEM ballast would cost me 375 dollars.

Interesting though, read a post on swedespeed, apparently the ballasts can get moisture in them and that's what stops them working, but if you soak them in alcohol they work again. This all happened right after a car wash so maybe that's what I need to do....it requires removing the bumper though which I'm not too comfortable doing.

You have managed to remind me why I didn't go HIDs or H4 conversion housings in my Cougar. Thanks smile.gif.

lol, if you get an aftermarket PnP kit you'll be fine. I never had a problem with any of those on any previous cars. These volvos just have very finnicky electrical systems and are well known for popping lightbulbs. hell, a day after I bought it a little bulb in the tail light went out. Just sucks that the bulb that decided to give out on me was one of the most expensive ones.

Murano FTW!!!!

lol, good luck!

If you do decide to go aftermarket you may want to confirm that aftermarket HID's work in your Volvo. I know of a few Volvo guys who can't run aftermarket HID's because they draw to low of a voltage which causes the car to think the bulb is blown.

I've heard of that happening in bimmers too. I know some places sell a part so you won't get the bulb out code

Mmmm, but those don't always work either.
J Kellz
joe, i have a set of BRAND NEW ballasts as well if you want to see if they will work or not before you blow anymore money. if not, no harm no foul. if they do, ill sell them to you cheap lol

yeah places like DDM and others sell non-foulers for their kits. I'm going real old school on this thing tomorrow, gonna bite the bullet and pull the bumper and try the old 'it got wet now soak it in alcohol' trick. Multiple people say they've done this, so what the hell right? Gonna pick up some silicone sealant for a couple little projects (seal up both ballasts and reseal the driver's headlight from condensation), and potentially some paint...haven't decided if I wanna do what I'm thinking of doing yet lol

OEM ballasts or aftermarket? If they're OEM, I know that volvo uses the same ballasts as like cadillac and such, may be worth a shot.

While we're at it, any RI members wanna come by tomorrow after work and help out? I'll pick up some beers and will be home by around 6 if anyone wants to give a hand.

noooo def not gonna work lol. I wouldn't go past 35w for an aftermarket set and to be honest the factory HIDs are def not 55w (they kinda suck to be honest, more because the high beams are the low beams with the shield retracted back). I'm not trying to make this thing set itself on fire lol.

chewy had hids in his ovlov but it was older. dont know how much the wiring changed over the years

I have 55w DDM HIDs in the Mazda. I've had them in for months and havent had any issues. As long as you get the harness you'll be all good

well i can still come by and give you a hand. i have 35w in my car if you want to try one of those. i dont want to mess up your car lol

haha i'm sure they would probably work, but with such a sensitive electrical system I really don't want to take the chance haha I won't be touching anything electrical if I can avoid it in this car.
J Kellz
well you will prob end up having to play with at least the headlights. like hyland said, as long as you have the harness for the them then you can run either 35 or 55 and just do aftermarket bulbs
TFIVEM
You can put hids into the headlights of newer volvos that didn't come with them standard. And you are right they will flicker and shut off due to low voltage and the car thinking the bulb is out. Basically you need to run a seperate relay that holds the differance in power for a short period of time. The car only checks it a the start when turning over after that your home free.

As for the s60r headlight, def don't change to aftermarket, it is going to cause tons of problems for you. Have it done right, and try Tasca online for parts and pricing, I usually Am able to get all my oem parts through there at a lower cost than aftermarket.

The bumpers on those cars arnt to bad just keep track of all the rivots and such that you take out... It's very easy to get bumper sag on the p2 volvos, we ran into that when we did my brothers FMIC

good luck

yeah, I have connections at tasca and cheapest i could find was $375 for the ballast. Hoping the alcohol trick will work. As for the bumper, it's 5 or 6 push pins on top, 2 nuts behind the rub strips, and 2 torx screw tensioners in the fender, so it's not as bad as I thought. If the alcohol does work, I'll be sealing the SHIT out of those ballasts with silicone while I've got the bumper off, as well as trying to dry out the driver's headlamp and seal it up as well.
