Anyone knowledgeable on the 6th gens? I'm pretty picky and trying to get the most for my money , i know that means sacrificing in the mile category etc but i still want sunroof and sporty looking. havent seen everything out there but im really starting to like the 04+ maxima. couple people mentioned timing and tranny issues. anyone have much personal knowledge/experience with them?
its about time i get a damn car!!

avoid the 4spd auto, they tend to grenade. The 5spd's are fine (ones with tiptronic) and the 6spds are better if you can find one. IIRC the 5spd came 05+.
Other than that the motor is great, lifetime timing chain so no need to worry about that. I've only ever really heard about wheel bearing issues and torn CV boots on them. They seem to just not break.

J, I love you buddy, but that info is way off lol
The 4 speed is the only way to go if you want an auto, there are virtually zero issues with them. The 5 speed autos are garbage....ask elitemax, he's on his third. 6 speed is fine as well, and CVT is a quality tranny if your willing to go 07 or newer.
They do have timing chains, but the tensioners are junk on every 04....so go 05 or newer. It's a $3-5000 job depending on where you go and how much you replace while your doing the job. Best bet is to go with an 05-06 with a 6speed, because the 4 speeds stopped being sold in 04

If you would open up to a 4th or 5th gen I would be ALOT more helpful

If you go 02-03 just gotta keep a eye on oil level. The tend to consume some oil between change intervals. AFAIK they fixed that in the 04+ motors. And the 95-01 motors don't burn a drop.

I have an 02 I35 (same car as an automatic maxima)
Like most engines it will eat a half a quart every 5k miles (not a problem at all) with synthetic oil and none when I switched to standard oil. (if your eating oil btw this seems to work with most motors)
The 4sp is junk if you wanna make real power but if you wanna make real power a maxima is not the right platform anyway. For anything resembling stock power levels it works just fine.
Great daily driver and you can get them for cheap. They are every bit as quick as a G35 too. In fact I ran my moms g35 coupe and my I35 back to back and the I35 was not a bit quicker it was A LOT quicker.

Unless your I35 is modified, there's no way. My car puts out more power factory then the I35, although a little heavier, and I ran a G35 coupe factory and auto, and it pulled on my car, so there's no way a coupe would be a lot slower then an I35. I would eat up a coupe at this point, but factory no way.

two things...
1. never saw a I35 that could walk from a G35 stock for stock.
2. This would be my recommendation for you Kristen. An 03-04 I35 is a great car. You get the luxury and Style of the infiniti, with the dependability of the maxima. affordable too! I would also recommend the 05+ altimas with a 3.5

The Auto g35s blow off the line they dont have enough power to get off the line without bogging like crazy. The Fwd platform actually has less traction so I can get the wheels spinning out of the hole and get goin.
From a roll I dont think I'de lose either but it'd be much closer. The G35 coupes are about 200lbs heavier.
I was able to go like a .3 -.5 seconds consistently faster in my I35 in 1/8th compared to my moms g35 coupe running them back to back.

less traction and wheel spin=WORSE track time...thats makes 0 sense at all. neither does a half second faster then a G35 in an 8th mile.
But regardless, I agree with Ed, the I35 is a beautiful car.

Actually it makes perfect sense. Its better to have a bit of spin out of the hole than to hook and bog. Dead hooking is great if you have the power to actually get the car off the line which g35s dont have.
This is coming from someone who daily drives the I35 and used to daily drive the G35 for a while too and raced them back to back at the same track. Not only that I used to work at an Infiniti dealer.. I have some experience with these cars.
I am trying to find the g35 times I swore I posted them

not a fan of any of theses, but the G35 is the #1 douche bag car..... PERIOD!
The newer altimas are nice, and look way more expensive than they are. I guess its all personal preference. You can go on any forum and find someone who will list off 100 reason why chevs are the greatest ever. And the same forum will have 100 reasons why they are the worst. It comes down to one thing and one thing only, your opinion.
A perfect example. I know a guy who had a 6.0L F-250 and he had all kinds of problems. So instead of buying a new Ford, he got a dodge. Now he wont touch another dodge because the tranny is worse than the 6.0 ever was. Stupid move on his part? No way! He decided in his opinion that the problems Ford had with the international motors was more than he wanted to deal with. If you are ok with burning 1/2qt of oil in a maxima instead of a toyotas gas pedal, thats all you.
All of that being said, these guys with their personal experience in the cars you are interested have the ideas and opinions based on some kind of fact, so dont write off their insight. But your a smart girl, weigh it all out and make YOUR decision.

Still on the original motor? If so that's damn good. Most 5.5's burn a bit. That's the only downside I can come up with, well besides it's 18wheeler like turning radius

, for 5.5's and even then its not that hard to take care of.
