QUOTE (Left Lane News)
General Motors will pause production of the Chevrolet Corvette at the sports car’s iconic Bowling Green, Kentucky, plant for the week of October 6. When production resumes on October 13, the automaker says that some employees will be laid off and that production will be slowed.

According to Automotive News, this marks the first cut in Corvette production since 1995. Up to 75 people could be laid off as production drops from 18.5 Corvettes per hour to 15. The plant also makes the Cadillac XLR, but it’s unclear what will happen with XLR production.

The Corvette had been having a hard year thanks to a weak economy and high gas prices, though sales rebounded strongly in response to August’s “Employee Pricing for Everybody” sales event which also included 2008 Corvettes.

Certainly a confirmation of GM's status...

EDIT: Cut out part of the article at the beginning... sorry.
Hondo
oh well, atleast there still gonna make em.
Mk3 Supra
I've been hearing lots of stories coming from the GM company, we'll just have to see what happens.
Sully
ehhhh chevy was slated to scrap the corvette in the 50's. no big loss if you ask me
hsssss
The problem with the Corvettes is the same with the Shelby cobra,The car Comapnies cater to the Mid 50's guy(or girl) who has a household income of over 150k a year and has extra money to spend on toys, But when the moneys not there anymore they dont buy.... Companies freak out and stop building, They should build those cars within reach of the average working person
bonnEVIL

If GM built the vette to be priced within the average working persons salery then no one would buy the camaro when it comes out. GM has a toy in every mans price range.
USARMYDICK114
im not worried.... the vette will still b out and kickin some ass! lol.gif

wouldnt be the first time, they skipped a production year in the 70's corvettes and mustangs are American automotive icons, as long as chevy and ford exist so will a version of these cars
fordfanatic
and thats why they're laying off. cant make the car if your bankrupt.
J Kellz
def sucks but what can u do
wantahertzdonut
So they're making a few less to cope with a market that has less demand. No big deal. This is normal and at least they're doing it rather than churning out thousands of cars that nobody will buy and they choke.

My hope is this drop in gas prices will be more than temporary and cause a pickup in the economy. Granted many things were getting bad up till now but $4/gal gas was the nail in the coffin.

Way to bring up a old thread..

Yeah, so? It's on the front page!
LSRengineering
lol, I'm just messin with ya.

Down from 18.5 to 15 vettes a day oh no! Like the number was staggering to begin with.
PSquare75
Actually, the vette never missed a year in the 70s....

It only missed 83.. due to the roll out of the totally new 1984 body.

I've seen the one 83 left in person...its right inside the Corvette Museum on a rotation display....unfortunately its white, i dont like white vettes(except C1's))
PSquare75
They made like 50 83s, but never actually *sold* them.
Whitemaro94
shows that our economy is slowy but surely dying when the most famous car in america is not being made...
LSRengineering
Its more because it cost so much to make and has so little benefits for GM. They have never made a lot of money off selling vettes.

as much as I love GM they are going down hill, all they have going for them now is the trucks
LSRengineering
All car companies are going down hill. Not just GM. Ford and Chrysler are failing and all the foreign companies are starting to feel it too.

The problem isn't that they aren't selling cars.. It's the damn UAW. I wish I got paid 95% of my wage if I was unemployed. By my old employer wtf.gif

The new Malibu is arguably nicer than the Camry,

Dr.Z or whatever his name is, made a huge mistake in killing the Neon. For the Caliber??

Minivans are dead, unless your name is Mopar.

The Fusion is a damn good car.. So is the Edge.

What I totally don't get is why Honda/Nissan/Lexus can basically rebadge their cars and get away with it (Sentra/G20 350z/G35... etc etc) and it's always oooohed and ahhhed. Different tailights, headlights, suspension, more power, does not make a new car... but from reading Car and Driver you'd think they invented sliced bread.

Detroit does this, and gets shat on.

GM should be ashamed of itself for losing Oldsmobile the way it did. How did they take a company that had the best selling car in America for 10 years on and off, and lose it?

To me the problem is brand identity. Where did all the names go?

GM made a mess of Saturn, now it's a Euro-Captive Import company. Where are the plastic cars? That was a good selling point. They didn't sell "ENOUGH" (in their eyes) so they totally revamped the brand. Way to go!! Odd, I still see 20 year old Saturns running around with no issues.

Ford gutted Mercury down to three vehicles. Smooth!

I could go on, but I'll stop.

I <3s my Saturn! lol.

But they are dependable cars. There are a ton of older ones around. At least my car is plastic before they decided to change it. biggrin.gif

Exactly. Mitsubishi is gagging, and has been for a while. Toyota is cutting back, Nissan is cutting some hours/jobs, and even Bentley is cutting jobs.

I <3 your plastic car biggrin.gif.

And you are correct... the old SL and SC Saturns seem to never die smile.gif
PSquare75
I wasn't knocking the Ion, lol.

I meant more the Vue/Aura/whatever that other car they have that is just a short Malibu.

hsssss
GM and Ford should get rid of the dead weight cars Trucks and vans...If i owned the company i would (GM) get rid of the sister names...Call everything GM but hold on to the best selling unit names i.e Malibu,GTO,CTS and so on(Same with Ford).. dealers could get any product made at their local(GM) dealer...some will say it would cheap seat the high end vehicles..but i think not due to the fact Benz has 30k to 150k cars/SUV's in the same showroom and the name still says highend vehicle...
