OK well I decided I wanted to do a little research on the engine that is currently in the Stang. I know it's an older block since the dipstick is in the front of the engine. I then decided to pull the valve covers and saw stock rockers in there, so I am assuming that a roller conversion was probably not done on this engine. I then decided to check the firing order on the car to make sure that's not was causing the car to run so rough. It currently has the newer firing order on it, so I guessed that they may have accidentally just routed the wires according to the HO engines instead of the older non HO firing order. I then swapped the wires to the non HO order and the car didn't run at all. Needless to say I put the wires back on the right way and the car runs again.

Well basically this tells me that someone at least changed the cam and distributor over to an HO style, but it still leaves me questioning whether or not the engine has been converted to roller. Either way the car is showing 3psi of fuel pressure on the gauge BUT runs pig rich, hell when I pulled the plugs all I could smell was fuel and was in shock that the car even started with the amount of carbon and fuel on them. I do have a feeling that the carb is too big for the car but other than that is there anything I should be looking for?

Genius, where are my carb #s!

3 psi sounds reallllllly low. Should be aorund 5-7, even at idle.

I saw a regulator in your pics, did you play with that?

Stangman_NB
didn't get the carb numbers but will do that tomorrow. I did get all this other great info though biggrin.gif

does it run rough just at idle or all the time?

my guess, if just part of the problem, if your getting as much fuel as your saying, you drowning out your spark at idle, you may need to either re-gap, or run a higher heat range plug to burn off the fuel, if not just a re-adjustment of the carb.
Ronin
sticky floats, power valves are stuck, of the idle mixture screws are outta whack
Stangman_NB
Well I did notice that the plug gaps are miniscule so maybe that does lend a problem

jibberish, I was just telling Paul this is my first venture into carbeuration. I have always been an FI guy.
05sonic3valve
the float sits in the bottom of the bowl and basically tells fuel when to stop coming in, kind of like a toilet, if its stuck it wont stock and you will have excess fuel, if not flooding.

the idle mix screw basically sets the mix of air and fuel at idle, so if your having fuel problems at idle this could very well be it.

I'd say get someone to help you that knows carbs.
hands on help.
carb tunning is not something you learn word of mouth.
It may need the mixture adjusted,or someone put oversized jets in it,float stuck.

Dammit, all carb guys over here this weekend ftw!!!! biggrin.gif

I know what a roller engine is cracka, I just figured that if someone had taken the time to do the conversion they would have spent the extra 200 bucks and gotten a nice set of aftermarket rockers lol

I bet the conversion isn't done!

i agree

i got a holley 650 ill sell ya!

Alright, I doubt the conversion was done. Actually I'll be its a 110LSA flat tappet cam that peaks out at 5500rpm.

Anyways.. 3 psi is low, I assume you have a fuel pressure guage. What kinda regulator is on the car? Play with that a little and get the fuel pressure up a little bit. The carb can be starvting for fuel. I assume its running pig rich to go with the nitrous as well, if you plan on spraying it you'll want the extra fuel there.

Get me the #'s off the carb, from the pics it looks like a dual feed 650DP, You need to do a electrical choke conversion as well.
Stangman_NB
I intend on going out to play with the car a little bit on Sunday, anyone that thinks they can help is more than welcome to come play as well smile.gif

BTW and recomendations on plugs for a carb'd car with a 150 shot?
LSRengineering
I assume dry shot?
Stangman_NB
yes
LSRengineering
Run the same plugs that are in there just make sure the timing is retarded. If you really want to run a set of NGK's in a 1 step colder plug.
LSRengineering
I just realized its a sniper system. It's not big enough to where you need to run colder plugs but most people say to run 1 step colder. I would.

Also do you have a purge?

Here is the instruction manual if you want to go over it and make sure everything is done right etc..

Stangman_NB
it's run right and it's a basic 150 kit so I need to buy a purge, blowdown tube and warmer for it. The plugs that are in there are garbage and I think they may have never swapped them to a colder plug when installing the juice.
LSRengineering
Is the motor a roller motor? Just go to the store and get a set of NGK's 1 step colder, should be done. I dont know the part # though but they should there.
