Full Version: Crank Turns 3/4 Way?

Having a SERIOUS issue here. The motor in question is my brothers. He spent some good money having this thing built. Here is the setup:

Stock Ford block
302 bored to a 306 (.030 over)
stock crank
eagle rods (stock length)
JE pistons
F-cam
1.72 rockers
Edelbrock performer heads

Now he went to prime the motor today and the crank turns 3/4 around then makes a ding sound... almost like a hollow ding sound. He called me flipping out! I told him to check the valve springs to make sure they are all moving. All turn out fine. He said he doesn't think its a stuck valve. The motor is on an engine stand so I had him check behind the motor to see if it was hitting.. nothing there. Flywheel isn't even there. All in the clear. So now I am thinking maybe something is in the cylinder? Maybe someone put something in the spark plug hole?

Motor has been on an engine stand for about a month now. The motor came right from the machine shop who did the work. It hasn't been moved, touched, nothing. I'm thinking someone put something in the spark plug hole or put something in the intake port as the upper intake plenum isn't even on there yet. He has 2 kids and that's what i'm betting my money on. Its hard to look down in spark plug hole to see if anything is in there and we cant just shake the motor around to listen for something.

My brother is going back to the machine shop tommorow to ask what the fuck is going on. The machine shop that assembled it has a very good rep and was told by builder way back when before he even touched the motor that he rotates the motor during assembly. I'm thinking either one of his kids put something in the motor or the motor was rotated with the oil pan off and its hitting the oil pan? We took out the distributor to rule that out.

Any ways to help diagnose this? crank turns 3/4 way then stops and will turn back 3/4 way then stops. Not looking for guesses of what it might could be or opinions. Looking to DIAGNOSE and do some testing before we haul this thing back to the machine shop.

Sounds like a rod is hitting the wall or something. Maybe the rods hitting the cam as well. Pull the pan and see if its anything in the bottom end.

who did the machine work?

Me telling you helps me test the motor how?
fordfanatic
and us guessing in a online forum helps you how? take it back to the shop or tear it down and you'll have your answer.

Pull off the pan like I said, best way of looking at it. Also turn the motor upside down if its on a stand.

pulled pan off and looked. nothing hitting anywhere.

just wanna do as many tests before bringing back to machine shop. going to do a leakdown test tommorow and fiure out if its a valve

Have him take all the pushrods out as well, then turn the motor. That'll eliminate anything binding in the topend.

and not being there to see it leaves us to nothing more than guessing, so stop being an asshole. tear the fucking thing down or take it back to the shop. end of story.

why would i tear down a brand new motor with 0 miles that i didn't assemble? thats liability written all over it. i may be being an asshole but im saying it how it is. I said no guesses and of course, people start guessing what it could be. Im trying to do as many tests as i can before it goes back to machine shop. if its something i can do, we will fix. if its more involved, back to shop. looking to diagnose myself, not internet diagnose. made this thread in hope of maybe something i missed.

so fuck off WTR!

good idea

You can also look in the exhaust ports and see if those valves are normal, also if anyhting is in the cylinder you can see it. Also I hope the machine shop measured P/V clearance.
fordfanatic
dont guess that taking the pushrods out might help, thats not what this thread is for........what a douche. you dont want to be liable, then take it back to the fucking shop.

Get a long piece of tubing that will fit down the spark plug hole.
Put it in each hole, and the other end in your ear while he turns the crank...you will hear which one has something stuck in it.

Well seen as how everything is really shiny in the motor (cyl walls and pistons) a greasy 2" bolt stuck out like a sore thumb.

Long magnetic telescoping pen and out came the bolt.

His little kid is a terror!!! he put the spark plugs back in and covered all holes so something like this wouldn't happen again. Glad he caught it before he tried to actually crank the motor because if anyone knows my brother, he would of just kept trying and trying and trying. I'm just glad I could intervene before things got out of hand.

Should of seen her with the hammer. We wont talk about that though LOL

Get a bigger hammer FTMFW!!!!
