In 1997, Mazda was suffering from what I like to call, "Mitsubishi Syndrome", where they were absolutely gagging financially. Ford upped their stake in Mazda to 33.4%, which gave them a controlling interest in the company. The money saved for production allowed Mazda to create more vehicles with more options, without drastically jacking up the price.

I don't think Mazda needs Ford, but they would most definitely have a hard time on their own... especially in an economy like this. If Ford were to sell them, there is no doubt in my mind someone else would pick them up. And I am sure Mazda is hoping that, as well.

As for the MS3, hope to see it without some camo sometime soon. Looks like the vehicle has a lot of potential to be a serious competitor in the sports compact market. I like those wheels, too

Honestly I was real REAL close to buying a Mazda 3 grand touring recently. The car handles awesome, rides really comfortably and is competitive in H-stock in scca autox. I couldn't pull the trigger on it though. I know I was going to get rid of whatever car I get now in a year or two for a BMW, so the depreciation hit didn't seem worth it to me to keep my Camaro off the road this winter.

The car is far from a piece of shit though. I'd take a Mazda 3 over all the other similar cars in it's class. Especially the hatchback.

wow is there a need to hate on Mazda so much? I am far from a fan boy nor do I care whether or not Ford bails on them, but the fact of the matter is Mazda does have a pretty decent line up and in all honesty if I could afford a Speed 6 I would have one in my driveway right now.

The fact is that Mazda got to where it is with Fords help,whether or not it needs Fords help to stay on top of the japanese market remains to be seen.
Mazda has received millions from Ford over the years to stay in business not to mention the billions it receives from the American public in sales.
Which BTW the American dollar is getting stronger by the day over the Yen...which means less profit for Mazda.
Mazda plans on buying half of the stock back and letting the Japanese market buy the rest.
The numbers right now don't look good at all.
Those are the facts.

In Japan the Yen is the Yen in their economy.
Just like a dollar is a dollar in ours.
Say one dollar trades for 30 Yen and employees in Japan make 300 Yen an hour.
A $30,000 car brings 90,000 Yen to the Japanese economy.
Now all of a sudden...one dollar brings 20 Yen.
You can't raise the price of cars in America by $10,000 to keep the same profit..No one will buy them.
The only choice you have is cut employees or lower the pay scale.
Either one is bad for Mazda and the Japanese economy.
Ford was their extra flow of cash from the American industrial market.
We buy Ford stocks...Ford buys Mazda stocks.
Our money spent on Ford is money spent on Mazda.
We can't buy Mazda stocks in America...Only Japanese can buy Mazda stocks.
But wait....the Japanese are getting less pay.
They can buy more when it comes to buying imports...but how does that help Mazda?
