If you plan on keeping your truck for a long time a diesel would be a good option . 300,000 miles on a diesel engine is pretty compareable to about 100,000 on a gas engine. But keep in mind that just because the engine is in good shape the body/ supsension will have seen better days. Also, unless your making a lot of long trips or hauling/ towing heavy loads a diesel really isn't practical.
DieselDBag
Brandon, what do you plan on doing with it in the future?? Do you want to get some power or keep it stock? How much do you wanna spend??? Do you want 2wd or 4wd??? I can ask 15468more questions but I wont.......lol

I'll sell you mine cheap cheap..........

how are they not practical?

If it's just a daily driver why spend the extra money for a diesel to begin with, nevermind mind the higher maintence costs if something goes wrong. And the way diesel/ gas prices have been over the past few years its alot cheaper to get a gas job even if you're getting better mileage from a diesel.

well to answer your questions, im looking for 4x4, for the most part it would be a dd, but down the road it would also be used as a tow, mainly for my car. my trip to work right now is about 15miles each way, mostly highway, and i have a feeling its about to get longer. i like diesel because i know they tend to last longer, and seeing as how my "weekend warrior" is 1000x more reliable than my past two dd's, well something with longevity sounds great right about now. zach to answer your question im not really sure how muvh im looking to spend right now. im toying over quite a few things in my head. id like to pay down / off the mustang, id also like to buy a bike, ive been looking at houses, and also i see a major move coming for work in the next couple years. so in some ways i tell myself to buy something cheap for winter / rainy days, buy a bike, for fun / mpg / real sunny days, and have the mustang for when i feel like it. or i could jimmy rig el saab o till i pay off the stang, then buy something decent. and at the same time im trying to save because like i said, id like to buy a house, and at the same time i feel a major move for work coming on so i will almost have to buy a house... lol. im just very un-decisive right now.
DB Duramax
You can buy a 99-03 7.3 PSD pretty cheap, I've seen them go for under 10 grand, if you are looking at a Duramax you will probably spend over 14k, if you just want something reliable, buy a 7.3 Powerstroke, not gonna set any land speed records but you will have a good reliable truck to drive/tow your car with.
05sonic3valve
land speed records... thats why i have the mustang, haha. jkjk. yea ive seen a few psd's and dmax's at decent prices, but ive found most are what i would call high mileage, like an 04 w 110k, but i also know diesel lasts a bit longer so im asking is say 100k mi on a 6 year old diesel normal, and what kind of things should i watch out for?
BoostedDakota
the guy at apollo auto sales has a 04 f350 king ranch with 60, 000 for 12000
DB Duramax
I think diesel trucks will typically have higher mileage than gas trucks, people who buy them usually intend to use them for a specific reason.
SMASH

ill disagree with that somewhat. i had a 98 ram. it wasnt a diesel but that truck was awsome. i beat that think like it stole from me and it never died. i had no problems with the rest of the truck besides frony u joints. had the truck for 3 years before i traded it for my gay ass jeep cause of the baby but..... i had good luck with mine!!!

X127!

I've got a buddy with an 01 that's tuned with injectors. It's eaten one tranni, and it second is already on the way out ( this truck has less than 120k on it).

i disagree. they are great trucks. the diesels that is. and i dont care what it is chevy, ford, dodge whatever, once you start making alot of power with any of them you will be doing a tranny. just look at all the duramax's on here and everyone has had a tranny done and the allison is supposed to be so great
DieselDBag
well most trannys are designed to handle stock HP. But when you double the HP and the Torque..... what would any tranny do?? kinda like a time bomb. could last years or months. if you leave the HP and torque alone the motor and tranny will probally out last the sheet metal. just gotta keep up on the maintenence like any other automobile
fordfanatic
i was talking completely stock. we have them at work and the truck falls apart around the engine. fucking junk made by chrysler.

thats no lie, they have to be the loudest out of the three. pretty close between the ford and chevy for the easiest on the ears.
Tom00769
I have had 3 rams in the past. If anyone has any doubts about these trucks I have a buddy who puts his through hell daily!! his family has had them since the 70's! They have one right now they bought new in 87 and it just plows snow today. And my friend is a fucking mad man and yes he has broken shit but it's been minor all in all.

Maybe the new 6.4 PSD the 7.3 and 6.0 motors are loud as hell!!! Duramax is very quiet.
fordfanatic
yeah thats what i meant, both of the new motors.
DB Duramax
The new PSD is awesome, finally Ford uses Common Rail. Look out they will be very easy to get huge power gain just through tuning now similar to Duramax and the Common Rail Cummins.
