I've found myself in between a rock and a hard place these days. To be honest the new Bird is just too damn quiet. I'm debating whether I want to go with some cheapy glass packs, mufflers, or a catback. I know for a fact that I want some form of muffler on it because this is more of a cruiser than it is a performance machine. I don't want something that is going to make a racket while idling but a nice calm grumble from below would be nice.. and open throttle I'd like something moderately aggressive.

So I want to know: What is a reasonably priced set up I could go for or a good choice of mufflers. The catback isnt to bad price wise but I dunno if I want to get that involved with this car.

i liked my custom set up with borla mufflers when i had my tbird. with the exception of running just straight pipes, witht hose cars exhuasts are going to be quieter than you'd expect. i was surprised after being out of the tbird scene for a while with my stang and hearing tbirds with exhausts again wondering where the sound was. you may not want to sink money into it, but don't cheap out keeping that oh so restrictive y-pipe on there.

i like magnaflows

Oh yeah I love the nice crunch ford put in the exhaust on the thunderbird, it's like they didn't want the exhaust to flow at all haha. I like the dynomax catback they make but I keep hearing that the dynomax mufflers are pretty much crap. I'd hate to get the catback and then have to get mufflers later on. I'll have to see what supercoupeperformance has these days.. last I saw he wanted an arm and both kidneys for an exhaust system.

i have a set of used dynomax mufflers if your interested let me know via pm, you could just have them welded in to your old set up

I also have a pair of dyno max mufflers that are brand new. They are set-up for side pipes I was going to use them but i couldn't cause of my subframes
they look like this and they are 2.5 inch

2 flowmasters no cats!

Well I think I've decided to go the poor mans route for the time being until I can get the cash together for a catback. So ill just be hacking the mufflers off and putting some down tips under there to make it look half way decent. That way I can get the rumble I want.. though i'm sure it will get very droney on the highway, and later on I can get a proper set up on my car that I can really enjoy. I'm thinking the flowmaster set up is a bit nicer than the dynomax.. though the difference in price is troublesome haha. But I think that will be the way to go.

you have a pm

well whenever you get the money slap some macs on it....so it doesnt sound like its underwater like flowmies do lol
fordfanatic
cut out the third cat and put in a 2 into 1 muffler there, then hack off the back mufflers. just cutting off the mufflers will sound like ass.

and my t-bird has plenty of sound.

here is my general rule of thumb for exhaust..... buy magnaflow and stop worrying about other substandard shit
fordfanatic
whatever you do mid-mount it. it will sound much better than having mufflers in the stock locations.

all of that aside though, the real restriction on these cars is the stock cats. the 90* bend from the manifolds kills flow.
