Full Version: Ignition Switch Not Working...something Funny Here

I just finished converting my 2000 SV650 from handlebars to clip-ons using parts from a crashed SV650S. All went well for the most part and the bike is back together, although it is minus lights and turn signals as this bike is not going on the road.

To do the swap, I have to replace the upper clamp with one from the S model, which required removal of the ignition switch among other things.

When I put the bike back together on Saturday, I reconnected the dashboard and switches. When I went to turn the key, nothing happened; no power to the dash, no power anywhere!

Then I noticed the key will turn about 3/4 of a revolution, and it also won't activate the steering lock. It's as if something in the ignition switch was disabled when I removed it, like a security feature of some sort. I really don't know.

The SV board hasn't been any help and I really want to get the bike running before I leave on vacation this week, I won't have time to deal with it when I get back and I'm planning on a track day on May 23rd.

Does the upper clamp have any differences to it, such as possibly something that may prevent the actual key cylinder from turning completely in it.

When CJ bought her 929 I had to change out the upper clamp because someone had broken he one on the bike when attempting to steal it. I had to completely disassemble her ignition and when I put it back on I realized that the clamp the guy had given me as a replacement was from a 954 and although it looked identical come to find out it didn't have a groove on it to prevent the key hole from spinning on it's own. SO we constantly had to fiddle with the key hole to be able to insert the key, if that makes any sense.

OH and as for the power Suzukis have some odd things about them for example my fuel pump on the Busa is set on the same relay as the flashers are, so no turn signals equals no fuel. May wanna check to see if your lights or flashers have anything to do with the no power issue.

From what I can gather, there are no differences between the clamps. The entire ignition switch comes off of the upper clamp as one large unit, but I will install it in the other clamp just to see if that changes anything.

As for the turn signals, I can always plug those back in to see if that makes a difference. I'll have to jump the circuit or find some sort of a bypass. On my 05, I disconnected them for a track day last year with no issues, and there's more electronic goodies on that bike than the 00. In any case, I will check.

hmmmm let me know how you make out. I have a feeling that the no power issue is something very minor that you may have overlooked or like I said maybe something is related to the lights and signals.

could be something minor, as nelson quoted, not to sure exactly the differences between the two bikes just weird that the key wont even turn that 3/4 turn? is the tumbler damaged?
wantahertzdonut
I wouldn't think the tumbler is damaged but it's certainly acting like it is. It worked just fine before I removed everything, and I don't remember dropping it or anything like that.

I'll try it on the N upper clamp tonight and see what I get. I'll post up when I have an answer.

Ok so I finally got around to trying the ignition barrel in the old upper clamp. (lots of OT at work has had me rather strung out) It makes no difference at all. So I took the barrel apart as much as I could. I was only able to get the tumbler out to see if something had broke, but it appears to be fine.

What isn't fine is the part the tumbler connects to seems to be disconnected from the guts of the ignition switch, it just turns freely. I can't get the bottom off, there's no screws! I don't know what's up. I think I'm going to have to find a new ignition barrel/switch, but it's very odd for the thing to fail for no reason at all.

I just decided to push the "fuck it" button and bought a ignition switch assembly and gas cap off a guy on the SV forum, I hope to have it in a week. That should take care of it.

Now it's time to remove the rear fender and lights since I won't be needing any of that.

Ok, all is fixed. I installed the new ignition switch assembly and everything lit up on the dash as it should. So I installed it, taped the harness up (no plastic, no headlight to hide it all), and took the bike out for a short spin.

I'm calling Harbor Freight tomorrow for a trailer, and then it's time to book some track days!
