Full Version: Weird Noise...might Be Procharger Issue?

Hey guys. Yesterday, the car ran fine. I actually even took it to SDCE and had chris do a quick lookover and we discussed a few things. Everywhere i drove, the car was fine.

Today, i start the car up and get a weird sound, almost like the fan was hitting the shroud but it wasnt, i checked that out. With the hood open, you can't really tell where the noise is coming from, but if the hood is closed it sounds almost like it's the procharger.

Any procharger users have any ideas? Chris mentioned that the blower might be leaking but the way that thing's sealed up i cant imagine it dumped all that oil overnight.

Any current/previous cobra owners have any ideas on it? Thought it could be the alternator, but wasn't sure. I'm having chris do the oil in the procharger sunday before dyno day anyways, but i just don't want to blow anything up in the meantime.

check the dipstick on the procharger

they circled the biggest one from the factory

on a more serious note, take the belt off and start the car up for a few seconds, then you'll know if its accessory related or engine related...

if the noise goes away, spin all the pulleys by hand and if any feel gritty or tight you found an issue

was just about to suggest that. one time with CJ's GTA the alternator went and it seriously sounded like rod knock until I pulled the belt off.

not really. It's just a few little nitpicky bullshit kind of things that are stemming from things the previous owner SHOULD have done maintenance-wise. I.e. replace stuff that was worn, change oil and fluids, general upkeep. The more i get into it, the more i see how poorly this car was treated by it's previous owner, but thankfully nothing major or super expensive (knock on wood) so i should be able to get it sorted fairly easily.

The car's 11 years old, i expected stuff to go bad on it, it's the way it is. I only posted this to get insight into what the problem could be, whether it's the procharger or something else on the accessory drive system, or something completely unrelated, from people who may have had some experience or knowledge towards the subject.

I was thinking alternator too, but if the alternator was going bad wouldn't the charging system be suffering? Volt meter is reading fine, no power issues at all.

sometimes the bearings on the pulley go and it doesn't affect the charging system. well untill they really fail but i suggest listen to spencer or get a long screw driver and use it like a stethoscope.

Hers was charging absolutely perfect but something went, either the bearings like John said or one of the brushes came loose, all I know is when she pulled into the driveway I swear I thought her engine had blown a rod

the alternator on my HD has sounded like a train since it was new, but it hasnt had an issue yet.

hmmm....was it more of a buzzing, like i described (like the fan hitting the shroud) or was it a banging/knocking kind of noise.

I figured if it was the procharger the car would stumble and it would be super noticeable, but it runs just fine. The more i think about it i'm pointing toward alternator. Maybe tomorrow ill see if i can get it tested at autozone.
Stangman_NB
testing it won't do anything because it seems to still be charging fine....like was mentioned pull your accessory belt off and see if the sound goes away....or like someone else said put the metal part of a screwdriver up to the alternator and the handle to your ear and see if it sounds like the sound is coming from there

that blower is oiled by the engine oil anyway isnt it? i think only the F series are self contained oil. pull the intake off and check the impeller on the blower. grab it and check to see what its got for free play. make sure there are no diggers in the impeller also. another easy way to rule out blower problem is like they said, pull the belt and run it

nope, p1 is self contained too.

I had a chance to listen to it when i got out of work tonight, and i'm pretty sure its the altrnator.

Kellz, i'm with ya buddy. Perks of being a barytendr

hah, sorry about that last line.

nelson, how long did it go like that before you absolutely had to change it or it went bad? My cash flow is not over-the-top right now so a 200 dollar alternator might have to wait a week...
Stangman_NB
I changed it that same day cause it sounded that bad...I also wouldn't recomend it running too long like that or else it could cause issues elsewhere in the electrical system of the car or could fail miserable while you are out in the middle of nowhere.

Dude diagnose the problem like others have suggested cause if it is the procharger or something in the motor your gonna totally fuck the thing up and it'll cost you 10x as much to fix....

problem's been diganosed, it's the alternator. Still charging fine knock on wood, hopefully getting it changed out (with lifetime warranty for $325) this week if i can gather teh fundz.
BOTTLEDZ28
$325 for an alternator? Holy smokes

^^LOL@YOU.

325 was installed at a shop. I'm getting the part for 150 and installing it myself.

ok...love it when this happens. Got the alternator, got up to the shop, took the belt off only to find out that the alternator wasnt making the noise. What i hadn't seen until i got the belt off was that the idler pulley on the blower apparently was losing it's bearing covers. Some shit must have gotten into the bearing and now, it's making noise. I should have thought of that when the alternator was fine the night before and continued to charge perfectly. So now i'm going to have to figure out how to get the pulley done. I've got a guy who does nothing but mustangs and prochargers that's gonna take a look for me tonight.

the bearing should be a standard part that presses in an out, easy fix.

not quite sure, i think the whole pulley needs replacing. Lots of procharger's parts are proprietary, even the oil etc.

Either way, i'm having this guy check it out tonight, we'll see what he says. He's got a hookup with a procharger distributor so i should be able to get anything i need on the cheap.
prochargedpumpkin
sounds like the same problem I just had with mine. the procharger black smooth idler below the alternator just broke apart inside completely. sounded like the alternator was letting go for obvious reason being attached right below it. Dez Racing should have it in stock if you need one.. He hooked me right up.

EDIT: didn't see this threads date was old..
